SUMMARY:Audition for Breaking the Code
DESCRIPTION:Audition for Breaking the Code will be Tuesday 15th November at
  Woodford Church Hall 7.30pm\n\nThis compelling and moving play tells the 
 story of Alan Turing\, a brilliant mathematician and engineer\, who devise
 d the means of cracking the German Enigma code which helped win World War 
 II by enabling allied forces to foresee German manoeuvers.It was on Church
 ill’s specific instructions that Turing was given all the resources he r
 equired – and his personal behaviour (that of being a homosexual) tolera
 ted. This “breaking of the code” by being unapologetically homosexual 
 at a time when homosexuality was illegal in Great Britain eventually catch
 es up with Turing…..he was eventually convicted of the criminal act of h
 omosexuality and sentenced to undergo hormone treatments which left him ph
 ysically and mentally debilitated. He died at the hands of an ignorant and
  ungrateful nation\, a suicide\, forgotten and alone. The jaw-dropping inh
 umanity of the situation in which the eminent University of Manchester pro
 fessor\, Turing found himself remain incomprehensible and shocking to this
  day.\n\nThis remarkable play by Hugh Whitemore is about who he was\, what
