Pack of Lies is based on the real-life Portland Spy Ring affair of the early 1960s, telling the story of an ordinary British family, the Jacksons and the infiltration of Soviet spies, the Krogers into a mundane middle-class community. The presence of MI5 and a realisation of the Kroger’s true purposes place, a great strain upon the Jacksons whose lives are never the same again. Hugh Whitemore’s play was first seen in the West End in 1983 with Judi Dench and Michael Williams. Dench won the Laurence Olivier Award as Best Actress for her performance. At the heart of the play lies the dilemma of whether or not personal bonds between friends are or should be stronger than bonds with the state. A gripping drama, not to be missed.
